The Monitor on My Nightstand
This is the more advanced version of the Omron blood pressure monitor, and it is the one I keep on my nightstand. The difference is significant: in addition to measuring your blood pressure, it simultaneously checks your heart rhythm for atrial fibrillation (AFib).
That second function is more important than most people realize.
What Is AFib and Why Should You Care?
Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm problem in older adults — affecting about 10% of people over 65. AFib increases your risk of stroke by five times. And here is the problem: AFib often has no symptoms. You can have it and feel completely normal.
The only way to detect it is to measure your heart rhythm. Traditionally that required an EKG at a doctor's office. The Omron Complete does it at home in the same 60 seconds it takes to measure your blood pressure.
How It Works
- Wrap the cuff around your upper arm as you normally would for blood pressure
- Place your fingertips on the metal sensors on the cuff
- Press start
- In 60 seconds, you have your blood pressure reading AND an EKG trace stored in the app
The companion app (Omron Connect, free) stores your readings, displays the EKG trace, and generates a PDF report you can email directly to your doctor. Many cardiologists actively encourage their patients to use this device between appointments.
My Take
At $133.99 this costs more than the standard Omron blood pressure monitor. It is worth it if you have any cardiac history, a family history of AFib or stroke, or if your doctor has suggested monitoring your heart rhythm. If you are otherwise healthy and primarily want blood pressure tracking, the standard Omron at $37.79 is sufficient.
I own both. This one is on the nightstand because I use it first thing in the morning. The standard one is in my bag for travel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Omron Complete replace a real EKG from a doctor?
No. It is a screening tool, not a diagnostic replacement. If it detects an irregular rhythm, that is a reason to contact your doctor — not a final diagnosis. Your doctor will order a proper clinical EKG to confirm any finding.
Do I need the app to use this monitor?
The device works without the app — it displays your blood pressure reading on the screen. However, to view and share your EKG trace and access the full reading history, the Omron Connect app is required. The app is free for iOS and Android.
Is the EKG function FDA-cleared?
Yes. The Omron Complete's EKG function is FDA-cleared for the detection of possible AFib. It is the first blood pressure monitor with an FDA-cleared EKG to receive clearance in the United States.
